5 Ways to Boost Your Local Google Traffic

If you run a local business in Metro Detroit, getting found on Google is most of the battle. Not ranking for the whole internet, ranking in your own city, for the people standing near you with their phones out. Here are five things that actually move local traffic, in the order I’d do them. None of them need a big budget. All of them beat boosting a Facebook post.
1. Finish your Google Business Profile
This is the highest-return hour in local marketing, and most owners leave it half done. Claim your profile, pick the most specific primary category, list every service, add real photos of real jobs, and get your hours and phone exactly right. For a “near me” search, this profile matters more than your website, because it’s what shows on the map. A complete profile beats a better business with an empty one. (Full list: the optimization checklist.)
2. Build a steady stream of reviews
Reviews are the fastest lever you control. They decide whether you land in the three-business Map Pack, and they decide who gets picked once you’re there. The trick is steady, not a one-time push: a few new reviews every month reads far better than forty from two years ago. Ask the moment a job goes well, with a link that opens the review box in one tap. (Here’s why reviews are your #1 ranking factor.)
3. Put your city in your words
Google can’t rank you for Troy if your site never says Troy. Name your city and your service area in your actual page copy, your titles, and your headings, the way a human would say it, not stuffed twenty times. “Kitchen remodeling in Royal Oak and the surrounding Metro Detroit suburbs” tells both a customer and Google exactly where you work. Most local sites forget to mention where they are at all.
4. Make the site fast and mobile-first
More than half your local visitors are on a phone, and Google ranks with speed in mind. A slow site that’s hard to use on a phone sinks in the results and loses the people who do find it. Open your own site on your phone, off WiFi. If it’s slow or you’re pinching to read it, that’s costing you traffic before anyone even calls. (See why a fast website beats a pretty one.)
5. Keep the same name, address, and phone everywhere
Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear online: your site, your Google profile, Yelp, Facebook, every directory. When they don’t match, “Ave” here and “Avenue” there, an old phone number lingering on some listing, Google gets confused about which is real and trusts you less. Consistency is boring and it quietly moves rankings.
Do them in order
Here’s the thing about these five: they compound. A complete profile with steady reviews, on a fast site that names your city, with consistent listings, is a machine that keeps pulling in local traffic without a per-click bill. That’s the difference between local SEO and ads, one keeps working after you stop paying. It’s the core of your local SEO foundation, and none of it requires spending on traffic you rent.
How this changes from one Metro Detroit city to the next
The five steps are the same everywhere. The pressure isn’t. In Royal Oak, four businesses in your category can sit inside one block, so being close stops mattering and the profile and the reviews break the tie. I walk through that on Royal Oak SEO. Sterling Heights is six miles long with five ZIP codes, so a profile that names one neighborhood misses most of the city, which is the problem on Sterling Heights SEO. In Troy, most owners I talk to have paid an agency once already and got a monthly PDF, so I start with the profile and the tracking, the way I lay it out on Troy SEO.
Where to start this week
Pick the one step you’ve skipped. If the profile is unfinished, finish it today. If reviews are the gap, text your next happy customer the link before they leave. Do one thing in 24 hours, then the next one. Nobody needs all five done by Friday, they need the first one done by tonight.
