Why Your Beauty Business Needs More Than an Instagram

Why Your Beauty Business Needs More Than an Instagram
A real one from a beauty business. I built finestrokesmicroblading.com for a Birmingham PMU studio. It doesn’t lean on Instagram to get found: search “microblading Michigan” and it’s the first business in the state, 4.8 stars, 137 reviews.

Your Instagram is beautiful. The feed is on point, the reels get saves, your regulars love it. And you’re still hoping the schedule fills itself every week. Here’s the hard truth for a Metro Detroit beauty business: Instagram shows your work to people who already follow you. It does almost nothing to reach the person who’s ready to book right now and doesn’t know you exist yet. That gap is why you need more than an Instagram.

Instagram preaches to the choir

Your feed reaches your existing followers, on the days the algorithm decides to show them. It’s great for staying top of mind with people who already found you. But the new client, the one who just moved to town or finally decided to book lashes, isn’t scrolling your grid. She’s searching. And a private or business-only Instagram profile isn’t where that search ends up. You’re putting all your effort into keeping the choir warm while the new congregation walks past.

You’re building on rented land

Here’s the part that should worry you. You don’t own your Instagram. The algorithm decides your reach, the platform owns your followers, and one change or one hacked account can erase years of building overnight. Ask anyone who lost their account. Your followers, your DMs, your booking, all of it, gone, with no way to reach the people you spent years gathering. A business built entirely on a platform you don’t control is a business one bad day from starting over.

A website is the land you own

Your own website is the one place that’s yours. It shows up when someone searches, it doesn’t hide your work behind a login, it holds your services and prices and booking, and no algorithm can bury it or take it away. Instagram is your storefront window; your website is the store. You need both, but only one of them is actually yours, and only one of them gets found by the ready-to-book stranger. (Here’s how those searches actually work.)

Get found by the ready-to-book client

When someone decides they want their brows, lashes, or hair done, they search “lash tech near me’ or “balayage in Royal Oak.’ To be there, you need the foundation Instagram can’t give you: a real website that ranks, a Google Business Profile, and reviews that land you in the local results. That’s where the high-intent clients are, and right now they’re finding whoever bothered to show up, not necessarily the most talented artist. (Reviews are the fastest lever: here’s why.)

Own your booking too

Booking through DMs means a client’s ready at 10pm and you reply at 2 the next afternoon, after she’s booked someone else. Your own site can hold real booking, prices, and a deposit to stop no-shows, running while you’re in the chair. Let clients find you, trust you, and book you without waiting on a reply. That’s the difference between a hobby feed and a business.

Keep the Instagram, add the foundation

None of this means quit Instagram. Keep posting, it’s a great window. Just stop treating a window as the whole store. Add the foundation you own: a site that gets found and books, reviews that build trust, a presence no algorithm controls. Straight to the point, that’s the work, and beauty businesses are exactly who it’s for. (Same lesson for PMU: how studios stay booked.)

What owning your presence looks like in Birmingham

Your customer there will happily drive ten minutes, so you’re up against Troy, Royal Oak and Bloomfield Hills on every search. Instagram shows your work to people who already follow you. A site and a finished Google profile show it to the ones who just typed what you do and your city. That’s the gap I work on at Birmingham SEO and Birmingham web design.

The smallest version you can start tonight

Finish your Google profile, add your booking link, and ask your last five happy clients for a review. That’s an evening, and it puts a real storefront under the feed you’ve already built.
