Why a Fast Website Matters More Than a Pretty One

Why a Fast Website Matters More Than a Pretty One
Proof these aren’t just opinions. Two sites I built, finestrokesmicroblading.com and revemedicalspa.com, rank first in Michigan for “microblading Michigan” and in the top three for “medical spa Troy,” at 4.8 stars (137 reviews) and 5.0 stars (111 reviews). Built to rank and to convert.

Everybody wants a website that looks good. Nobody brags about one that loads fast. Then the pretty site goes live, the phone doesn’t ring any more than it used to, and nobody can figure out why. I can. It’s the three seconds before your beautiful homepage ever shows up.

I fix marketing foundations for Metro Detroit business owners, and speed is the leak I find most often on a site the owner is proud of. Here’s why a fast website beats a pretty one every single time, and how to tell which one you’ve got.

People leave before they see the design

Google’s own research found that 53% of mobile visitors leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. When load time goes from one second to three, the odds someone bounces jump 32%. Read that carefully: they’re gone before your gorgeous hero image, your logo, or a single word of your copy renders. The design you paid for never got seen.

A slow site doesn’t look slow to you. You’re on office WiFi, the images are cached, it snaps right up. Your customer is on one bar of data in a truck in Warren, and they’re watching a white screen decide whether to load.

Run the test yourself in thirty seconds

Take your phone off WiFi. Open your site fresh, and count out loud until you can actually read and tap something. One Mississippi, two Mississippi. If you get past three, you have your answer. That’s the exact moment half your visitors already left, and you can feel how long it is when you’re the one waiting.

Do it again on your competitor’s site. If theirs loads first, that’s who got the call.

Speed is money you’re already spending

This is the part that stings. If you’re running Google Ads, you pay for every click whether the page loads or not. Spend $1,000 a month pointing traffic at an eight-second page and roughly half that budget bought people a loading screen. You didn’t waste it on bad targeting. You wasted it on your own site. (More on that leak: how to stop wasting your Google Ads budget.)

It costs you the free traffic too. Google uses page speed as a ranking signal, so a slow site sits lower in the results and gets fewer clicks before you spend a dollar.

Pretty and slow is the worst of both

Here’s where most agencies get it backwards. A lot of “beautiful” sites are slow because of what makes them beautiful: giant uncompressed images, five custom fonts, a video background nobody asked for, a page builder stacking scripts on scripts. The design is the reason it’s slow. You bought the thing that’s costing you customers and you’re proud of it.

None of this means ugly is fine. It means fast comes first, and then you make it look sharp inside that budget. A clean, quick page that says the right thing beats a slow showpiece that nobody waits for. That’s the whole idea behind a conversion-ready website: built to load and built to convert, not built to win a design award.

What I won’t do

I won’t rebuild your site to “look more modern” and quietly hand you the same speed problem in a nicer wrapper. And I won’t touch a redesign without tracking in place first, because if we can’t measure whether the new site loads faster and brings more calls, we’re both guessing. Most of my clients come to me after an agency sold them a redesign that looked great in the mockup and did nothing for the phone. If you’re not sure whether you need a refresh or a full rebuild, here’s how to tell.

What I check first on a slow site

Image size is the usual culprit: a phone photo uploaded straight from the camera, four megabytes, on a page that shows it the size of a postage stamp. After that come plugins nobody remembers installing and a template carrying features you never turned on. Fixing those three usually does more than any redesign. A Troy relaunch has to get this right without losing rankings, which is the focus of Troy web design.
