How to Get Your Business Named by ChatGPT and Google AI

Ask ChatGPT “who’s the best painter in Royal Oak?’ and it’ll give you a few names. Ask Google’s AI the same thing and it does too. Somebody is getting named in those answers for what you do, in your city, right now. The question is whether it’s you. Here are the signals that actually get a business named by AI assistants, and none of them are magic.
Say clearly what you do and where
AI models repeat what they can understand. If your website plainly states “we do kitchen remodeling in Royal Oak and the surrounding Metro Detroit area,’ a model has a clean sentence to hand back when someone asks. If your site is vague, clever, or buries what you actually do under slogans, the AI has nothing solid to repeat, so it names someone clearer instead. Plain beats clever here, every time.
Be consistent everywhere
AI pulls from across the web, not just your homepage. When your name, address, phone, and description match everywhere they appear, your site, Google, Yelp, directories, the model sees one confident, consistent business and trusts it. When they conflict, it hedges, and hedging means it names the competitor it’s more sure about. Consistency is boring and it’s exactly what makes you legible to a machine.
Get mentioned by other sites
An AI trusts what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. Being listed in local directories, mentioned in a local roundup, cited on a supplier’s site, showing up where your industry gathers, all of it tells the model you’re real and known. You don’t need to be famous. You need to exist in more than one place the AI has read.
Reviews still matter, maybe more
Reviews feed AI answers the same way they feed Google. A business with lots of recent, positive reviews reads as the safe recommendation, and “safe recommendation’ is exactly what an AI is trying to give. Keep the steady stream of reviews going, it’s doing double duty now. (Here’s how to build that stream.)
Answer real questions in plain language
Models love content that directly answers the questions people ask. A page that clearly answers “how much does a bathroom remodel cost in Michigan?’ can get lifted straight into an AI response, with your name attached. Write the honest answers to your customers’ real questions, in plain words, and you become a source the AI quotes. Most of your competitors are still writing slogans.
Hand the AI a clean summary
There’s a newer, concrete step too: an llms.txt file that gives AI models a tidy summary of your site and what you offer. It’s simple to add, almost nobody has one yet, and it’s a direct line to the machines doing the reading. Early and easy is a good combination.
It’s your foundation, aimed at a new reader
Notice the pattern: clear site, consistent info, reviews, honest content. That’s the same foundation that wins Google, pointed at an AI. I won’t sell you a mysterious “AI service’ that’s secretly just this, but I’ll make sure your foundation is built so the machines reading the web actually find you in it. (More on the shift: what GEO is and why it matters.)
A five minute test you can run right now
Open ChatGPT and ask, “Who’s the best [your service] in [your city]?” Then ask it again with the next suburb over. Write down who gets named, in what order, and what reasons it gives. Those reasons are a map of what the AI found believable: reviews, a clear service page, consistent listings, a site that says plainly where they work.
What I’d fix first, in order
- One plain sentence on your homepage that says what you do, for whom, and where. “Kitchen remodeling in Royal Oak and across Metro Detroit” works. “Solutions for your every need” doesn’t.
- One consistent name, address and phone across your site, your Google profile and every directory.
- A page per service and per city you serve, so there’s an exact answer to each question.
- Real reviews, collected steadily and answered by name.
Nothing on that list is exotic. It’s the same foundation I build for local search, aimed at a different reader, and I cover how I do it on AI visibility.
Curious whether AI names you?
I’ll run the real questions your customers would ask the AI assistants, live, and show you whether you get named and what it takes to fix it. No pitch deck, no closer, just 30 minutes and a straight answer.
