Google Ads vs SEO: Where Should a Michigan Business Spend First?

Google Ads vs SEO: Where Should a Michigan Business Spend First?

Every Metro Detroit owner with a marketing budget hits the same fork: put it into Google Ads, or into SEO? Ads bring leads this week and stop the day you stop paying. SEO brings free leads for years but makes you wait months to see them. Pick wrong for your situation and you either bleed cash or starve waiting. Here’s how to decide which one you spend on first.

What each one actually is

Google Ads is renting the top of the search results. You pay per click, you show up today, and the moment your card stops, so do the leads. SEO is earning those spots instead of renting them. You improve your site and your Google presence so you rank on your own, which is slower to build but doesn’t charge you per click once it’s working.

Rented traffic and owned traffic. Neither is “better.” They’re tools for different moments.

Start with ads when you need leads now

If you need the phone ringing this month, ads win. New shop, slow season, a calendar with gaps you need to fill in weeks not quarters, that’s ads. You can turn them on Monday and have calls by Friday. The tradeoff is you’re paying for every one, and it never stops being a bill.

The catch nobody mentions: ads only pay off if the page behind them is built to convert. Sending paid clicks to a slow homepage is how budgets die. (Here’s how to stop wasting your Google Ads budget.)

Start with SEO when you’re playing the long game

If you can wait a few months and you want leads that don’t cost per click forever, SEO is the better buy. It compounds. Month one feels like nothing. Month six you’re getting calls you don’t pay for, and month twelve those calls are still coming while your ad-only competitor is still feeding the meter. For most local businesses, your Google Business Profile and reviews are where this starts, and it’s the cheapest lead flow you’ll ever build. (See local SEO vs organic SEO.)

The honest answer: it’s usually both, in order

Here’s what I actually tell people, because “pick one” is a false choice for a business that plans to be around in three years. Use ads to buy leads now while SEO is still warming up. As your organic rankings climb and start carrying the load, you dial the ad spend down. Ads are the bridge, SEO is the road. You run ads so you’re not starving during the months SEO takes to kick in, then you lean on SEO so you’re not renting forever.

What breaks this plan

Neither one works pointed at a broken website. Ads waste money on a page that doesn’t convert, and SEO can’t rank a slow, thin site no matter how long you wait. That’s why I won’t take ad money from someone whose foundation isn’t ready, it just fails faster and more expensively. Foundation first, then traffic, whichever kind you buy. (More on that: why website, SEO, and ads must work together.)

A simple way to split your first budget

If you need leads this month and your site converts, put the first dollars into ads, with tracking installed before the budget goes up. If your site doesn’t convert yet, fix that first, because $1,500 a month in ads pointed at a site that can’t convert is $18,000 a year gone. Meanwhile start the slow work: the profile, the pages, the reviews. Ads cover the wait, SEO replaces the ads.

What each one looks like in a real Michigan market

In Detroit, a business stuck on page two usually has a setup nobody finished, and the fix is on Detroit SEO. Paid ads for a Detroit business start with the account structure and tracking on Michigan PPC. In Troy, Rêve Medical Spa relaunched in June 2026 and picked up 750 clicks from Google search between July 23 and September 6. That’s SEO, working while the ads weren’t even on. See Troy SEO.

The rule I use

Ads when the foundation can catch the leads. SEO always, because it keeps paying after you stop. If someone tells you it’s one or the other, they’re selling you the one they happen to do.
