Google Business Profile Optimization: A Michigan Checklist

Google Business Profile Optimization: A Michigan Checklist
A real one. revemedicalspa.com in Troy, a site and profile I built, sits at 5.0 stars with 111 reviews and lands in the Map Pack for “medical spa Troy” and “Botox Troy.” A complete profile plus steady reviews is what put it there.

Your Google Business Profile is the single highest-return asset you own, and it’s free. For a Metro Detroit customer searching “plumber near me,” it matters more than your website, because it’s what shows up on the map with your stars, your hours, and a call button. Most owners claim it, fill in half the fields, and never touch it again. Here’s the checklist to actually optimize it.

Claim and verify it

Sounds obvious, and half the profiles I look at aren’t verified, or worse, someone else is managing an old listing the owner forgot about. Search your business on Google. If there’s a profile you don’t control, claim it and verify with the postcard or phone option. You can’t optimize what you don’t own.

Nail your categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Pick the most specific one that fits, “Emergency plumber” beats “Plumber” if that’s what you want the calls for. Then add every secondary category that genuinely applies. This one field quietly decides a lot of your visibility.

Fill in every single field

Google rewards complete profiles, and customers trust them. Hours, phone, website, service area, the services list with descriptions, attributes like “woman-owned” or “free estimates.” Every blank field is a small reason to rank you lower and a small reason for a customer to pick someone else. Complete beats impressive here, a fully filled profile outranks a better business with a half-empty one.

Add real photos, and keep adding them

Profiles with photos get far more calls and clicks than ones without, and stock images don’t count. Add real photos of real jobs, your team, your truck, your storefront, before-and-afters. Then keep adding a few every month. A profile that gets fresh photos looks alive and busy. One with three photos from 2021 looks closed.

Get reviews, and answer them

Reviews are the biggest lever on this whole profile. More of them, higher rated, recent, and answered. Reply to every review, good and bad, in public. It shows Google the profile is active and shows customers how you handle things. A steady trickle of new reviews does more for your ranking than almost anything else here. (Here’s how to collect them without begging.)

Post, and use the Q&A

Google lets you post updates like a mini social feed, offers, jobs done, seasonal notes. It’s a small signal that you’re active, and most competitors ignore it entirely, so it’s free ground to take. Seed your own Q&A section with the real questions customers ask, and answer them, before a stranger fills it in wrong.

Why this is worth the hour

Do all of this and you’ve tuned the exact thing that decides whether you land in the Map Pack, the three spots that catch most local calls. No ad spend, no per-click bill, just the free storefront Google already gave you, actually finished. It’s the foundation of showing up in “near me” searches and the Map Pack.

Mistakes that quietly cost you the map

  • A service area that stops at the city line. A Detroit profile that never lists Ferndale, Dearborn Heights or Warren can’t match searches from those places. See Detroit SEO.
  • The wrong primary category. Close to what you do, not what customers type.
  • An address spelled three ways. Yelp, Apple Maps and Bing each disagree, so Google trusts none of them fully.
  • Nothing that says which city you mean. Google has to guess which Birmingham, and it doesn’t always guess you. See Birmingham SEO.
  • Stuffing keywords into the business name. It reads like spam, and Google can suspend a profile for it.

A 20 minute routine for every month

Add two or three real photos. Reply to every new review. Post one short update. Check the Q&A for questions you can answer. Confirm your hours, especially around holidays. That’s the whole routine, and it’s enough to keep a profile looking alive while competitors let theirs go quiet.
