How to Show Up in the Google Map Pack in Michigan

There are three spots on Google that send more local calls than everything else combined. Three. When someone in Metro Detroit searches for what you do, Google shows a map with three businesses on it, and those three catch most of the phone calls in your whole city. Everyone below them fights over the scraps. This is the Map Pack, and getting into it is the highest-value work in local marketing.
Here’s how those three spots actually get chosen, and what it takes to claim one in a Michigan market.
What the Map Pack is
Search “roofer in Warren” or “coffee near me” and look at the top: a little map, then three businesses with stars, hours, and a call button. That’s it. That’s the Map Pack. It sits above the regular blue-link results, so it’s the first thing every phone sees, and on a phone screen it’s often the only thing before the fold. Land there and you get seen by nearly everyone searching. Miss it and you’re on page two, where the calls have already been made.
Google weighs three things
Google decides the three winners on a mix of distance, relevance, and prominence.
Distance is how close you are to the searcher. You can’t change your address, but it’s why a shop in Troy can win Troy searches and still lose Novi ones. Relevance is how well your Google Business Profile matches what they typed, your categories, your services, the words on your profile and site. Prominence is how known and trusted you look, and in plain terms that’s mostly reviews, plus consistent listings and a solid website behind it all.
You can’t move the building. You can absolutely win relevance and prominence, and that’s where the three spots are actually decided.
Your Business Profile does most of the work
The Map Pack is drawn almost entirely from your Google Business Profile, not your website. So a complete, active profile is the price of admission. Claim it. Pick the most specific primary category you can. List every service. Add real photos of real jobs, not stock. Keep your hours and phone accurate to the character. Post updates so it looks alive. An abandoned profile tells Google you might be too. (Full list: the Google Business Profile optimization checklist.)
Reviews are the tiebreaker
When distance and relevance are close, reviews decide it. More of them, higher rated, and recent. That’s the lever you control that moves prominence fastest, which is why I tell every owner to build a steady review habit before spending on anything else. (Here’s why reviews are your #1 local ranking factor, and how to actually collect them.)
Check where you stand right now
Search your main service plus your city on your phone, from your service area. Are you in the three? If not, look at who is and read their profile next to yours. Almost always it’s more reviews and more photos, not better work. That visible gap is your to-do list. Run the search from a couple of different suburbs too, you’ll see your ranking change block to block, and that tells you which areas you own and which you’re losing.
What this is worth
One of those three spots is a stream of ready-to-call customers, every day, that you don’t pay per click for. That’s the difference between the Map Pack and ads: ads stop the day you stop paying, a Map Pack spot keeps working. It’s the closest thing to free lead flow a local business has, which is exactly why it’s worth doing right. It’s the heart of your local SEO foundation.
How the three spots change from Troy to Warren to Royal Oak
Distance matters more in some places than others. Warren is Michigan’s third largest city with seven ZIP codes, so a business on the east side can be the closest result for one searcher and invisible to another a few miles west. Royal Oak packs about 58,000 people into 11.8 square miles, so closeness is a wash and reviews and profile detail decide it. I break down both on Warren SEO and Royal Oak SEO.
The receipt: Rêve Medical Spa in Troy sits in the pack with 5.0 stars from 111 reviews, and the setup behind it is on Troy SEO. Run the same searches yourself and compare.
