How Long Does Local SEO Take in Michigan?

Local SEO usually takes 3 to 6 months to turn into phone calls in a competitive Michigan market. The build itself takes 4 to 8 weeks. Paid ads can show measurable leads in 30 to 60 days. If someone promises page one from SEO alone in 30 days, they’re guessing or selling something.

Straight to the point: the timeline isn’t the problem. Not knowing what’s supposed to happen in each month is the problem, because that’s how an agency gets to say “it takes time” for a year.

What actually happens, month by month

Weeks 1 and 2: fix the foundation and turn on tracking. I fix the Google Business Profile first: the primary category, the service areas, and every listing that spells your name or address a different way. Call and form tracking goes in at the same time. A timeline with no scoreboard is just a story.

Weeks 3 to 8: build. A page for each service and each city you work in, schema (a bit of hidden code that tells Google what you do and where), and a simple system for getting reviews. This is the one-time build, and it runs 4 to 8 weeks depending on your city and how crowded your market is.

Months 2 and 3: Google re-reads everything. The first thing that moves is usually impressions, then appearances in the map pack for the easier searches. It looks small. It’s the part everyone quits on.

Months 3 to 6: the calls. This is where the phone starts to separate from the baseline. Crowded categories like med spas and contractors sit at the long end.

Is 3 to 6 months actually honest?

Sometimes it’s faster, and the first signal is clicks, not rankings. Fine Strokes, our own studio in Birmingham, went from 2.18 Google clicks a day to 6.91 in the eleven days after we rebuilt it. Clicks aren’t calls, and I won’t pretend they are. They’re the first proof the setup is working.

Rêve Medical Spa relaunched in June 2026. Between July 23 and September 6 it got 750 clicks and 42,444 impressions from Google search. You can check the setup behind it on Troy SEO.

When “6 to 12 months” is honest, and when it’s stalling

For SEO in a very competitive market, 6 to 12 months to the top can be a straight answer. The test is what they show you along the way. An agency doing real work can tell you what changed this month, which pages got built, and which calls came from search. If you’re month eight with no tracking and a PDF, you’re not waiting on Google. You’re waiting on an agency. Run the one-question test on them.

What speeds it up and what slows it down

Speeds it up: a finished profile, real reviews, a page for each service and city, a fast site, and tracking from day one.

Slows it down: a half-filled profile, listings that disagree, one page that tries to cover everything, and a market where four competitors sit inside one block.

The city changes which one hurts you:

  • Detroit: a profile that stops at the city line can’t match searches from Ferndale or Dearborn Heights. See Detroit SEO.
  • Birmingham: Google has to guess which Birmingham you mean unless the site says it plainly. See Birmingham SEO.
  • Royal Oak: four businesses in your category can sit inside one block, so the tie gets broken on category, reviews and what your profile says. See Royal Oak SEO.
  • Sterling Heights: a city six miles long and five ZIP codes wide needs service areas that match it. See Sterling Heights SEO.

The statewide version of the work lives on Michigan local SEO.

What you can check yourself at 30, 60 and 90 days

  • 30 days: the profile is complete, and when you call your own tracking number the call shows up in a report.
  • 60 days: the new service and city pages are live, and Google Search Console shows impressions climbing for them.
  • 90 days: you show up in the map pack for at least one “service plus city” search, and you can name a call that came from it.

If you can’t check any of those, ask your agency why. If you don’t have an agency, that’s the list I’d hold me to.
