Branding is one of the most critical aspects of any business, doesn’t matter if you are large or small. A compelling brand strategy gives you a significant advantage in the increasingly competitive marketplace. But what does “branding” really mean?
How does branding strategy affect a small business like yours?
The easiest way to understand branding is to think of it as: “Your Brand is your promise to the customers.” When costumers think of your brand, they “are promised” (they expect) certain integrity from your products and services. Your brand tells your story, your experience, and your journey to your consumers. Example: As I’m writing this article, I’m wearing a pair of Sony Noise Cancelation headphone (I get some of my work done in public places and coffee shops). There are many headphones on the market, but I chose Sony because I know they’re reliable and comfortable based on my experience with their products. The Sony Brand has made that “promise” to me as a customer, and that’s how you get brand loyalty. (I’m not affiliated with Sony by the way!)
It’s the: how, what, where, when, and to whom you want to deliver your brand message. Choosing where to advertise is part of the brand strategy. Your distribution channels such as Website, Newsletters, Social Media are also part of your brand strategy. Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to Brand Equity. Think of Coca-Cola: The formula has been around for decades, and so has the Logo and Colors. There are plenty of generic cola manufacturers, which are very similar in taste but they lack the Brand Equity. This is why Coca-Cola will charge more for their products and still generate more sales than other generic brands. Emotional attachment is another added value to brand equity, which comes in the form of perceived quality or associations. Example: Nike frequently associates their products with star athletes, which leads to increased sales based on the fans (emotional attachment) of that particular athlete.
How to define “Your Brand.”
To identify your brand, you have to go through the journey of self-discovery for your business. A lot of small businesses neglect this because it can be time-consuming and requires some clear thinking. Here are a few simple self-discovery questions:
- What is our company’s mission?
- What benefits do our products and services offer to our customers?
- How do our consumers perceive our organization now?
- What qualities do we want to be known as a company
Remember: Your organization exists because it serves a need in the marketplace, so you want to make sure you have constant feedback from your customers.
Put your LOGO everywhere.
Keep it simple, here a few time-tested tips on how to communicate your branding message: Put it in Writing. What key messages do we want to communicate as a brand? Do our employees/contractors know about our brand attributes? (Also known as organization culture) Integrate your brand into everything you do. Branding spreads to every regard of your business–from how you treat your customers when you answer your phones, email signature, to uniforms and dress code. Develop a tagline. Write a meaningful, memorable and concise statement that captures the essence of your brand. Be true to your brand. Keep your promises! Your customers feel violated if you fail to meet your brand expectations. In today’s day and age with all the online channels available to consumers, they will “Pick up their pitchforks and roast you very quick” Be consistent. You can’t build your brand overnight, if you’re a startup business you might struggle with this in the beginning stages. But whatever you do, make sure you stay as consistent as possible. Create brand standards and design templates for your marketing elements. Utilize the same color scheme, logo placement, look and feel everywhere. There’s need to try to be fancy, just BE CONSISTENT.
