Named in 1832, a city since 1969.
Novi was organized as a township in 1832 on land taken from Farmington Township. Dr. J. C. Emery offered the name at his wife’s suggestion, because residents wanted something shorter than Farmington. The popular story about the sixth toll gate, No. VI, doesn’t hold up: the toll road came in the 1850s. Novi became a city in 1969, and Twelve Oaks Mall was built in 1977. A good local story is worth a lot, as long as it’s true.
