Why Is My Website Getting Traffic but No Phone Calls?

If your website gets traffic but the phone stays quiet, the leak is usually between the click and the call, not in the traffic. Five things sit in that gap: speed, the headline, proof, the way to reach you, and tracking. You can check all five yourself in about ten minutes, on your own phone.

Most owners I talk to assume they need more visitors. Then I look at the site and find that the visitors they already have are leaving in the first few seconds. More traffic into a leak is just a faster leak.

The five leaks, in the order a visitor hits them

1. It loads slow. Google’s own research found that 53% of mobile visitors leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. They never see your design, your reviews or your number. Check it on your phone, on data, not on your office wifi. (More on this: why a fast website beats a pretty one.)

2. The headline doesn’t say what you do. “Solutions for your every need” tells a visitor nothing. “Kitchen remodeling in Royal Oak and across Metro Detroit” tells them they’re in the right place before they scroll. If a stranger can’t say what you sell after three seconds, they’re gone.

3. There’s no proof. A stranger about to spend money assumes the worst until you show otherwise. Real reviews with real names, and photos of your actual work, do that job. Rêve Medical Spa in Troy has 5.0 stars from 111 Google reviews, and that number does the trust work before anyone reads a word.

4. The number won’t tap and the form asks too much. Your phone number should be a link that dials when tapped, at the top of every page, and the form should ask for a name, a number and what they need. Not twelve fields. Every extra field loses someone you already paid to attract.

5. Nobody is tracking which page brings calls. Without call and form tracking by page, you can’t tell which of the four fixes above matters most. You’re guessing. $1,500 a month in ads on that guess is $18,000 a year.

The ten-minute test

  1. Put your phone on data and search your own business by what you do and your city. Time how long your site takes to show.
  2. Read only the first screen. Could a stranger say what you sell and where you sell it?
  3. Find a review or a photo of real work without scrolling past three sections.
  4. Tap your phone number. Does it dial?
  5. Submit your own form. Does a message arrive, and how fast does anyone answer?

Number 5 is the one that surprises people. A form that looks fine and sends nothing can sit broken for weeks with nobody noticing.

How it breaks differently in each city

Birmingham: your customer has two or three tabs open before they call anyone, so a vague title or a buried number sends them to the next tab. See Birmingham web design.

Troy: relaunches are where forms and booking links quietly break. When a customer off Big Beaver tries your link and lands on a page that doesn’t exist, that call is gone. See Troy web design.

Detroit: one page for every service and every neighborhood means the page matches none of them exactly. See Detroit web design.

What I’d fix first

Start with the cheapest fix that stops the most leaks. The number and the form take about thirty minutes and fix the leak a ready customer hits first. The headline takes an hour. Proof takes as long as it takes to collect reviews and photos. Speed can need a developer. Tracking goes in before any of them, so you can see which fix moved the phone.

When traffic is the problem

Sometimes it really is traffic. If almost nobody lands on the site, none of this matters yet, and the fix is local search, not design. But if you’re getting a steady trickle of visitors and no calls, fix the leaks first. It’s cheaper, and every fix you make there makes the traffic you earn later worth more.
