What Is AI Search Optimization (GEO) and Why It Matters in 2026

Your customers are starting to ask ChatGPT the questions they used to type into Google. “Who’s a good roofer in Troy?’ “Best med spa near me?’ And the AI answers with a short list of names. If your business isn’t one of them, you just lost a customer you never even knew was looking. Getting named in those answers is what people mean by GEO, and here’s what it actually is in plain English.

GEO, without the jargon

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Strip the buzzword and it means one thing: getting your business mentioned when someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation. SEO is about ranking in Google’s list of links. GEO is about being one of the few names an AI actually says back when a customer asks it who to hire. Same goal as always, getting found, new place it happens.

Why it’s suddenly worth caring about

For years, a search gave you ten blue links and the customer picked one. An AI answer gives them two or three names and a reason for each. There’s no page two to fight your way onto, there’s barely a page one. You’re either in the short list the AI reads out or you don’t exist in that conversation. That’s a much smaller door, which means the businesses that get through it early win big.

How an AI decides who to name

AI assistants pull from what the web says about you, not just what your own site claims. They lean on the same signals that already make you findable and trustworthy: a clear website that plainly states what you do and where, consistent information across the web, real reviews, and being mentioned on other sites and directories. In short, an AI names businesses that the web clearly and consistently describes. If your online presence is vague or contradictory, the AI has nothing solid to repeat.

The good news for local businesses

Most of GEO is the same foundation that helps you everywhere else. A fast, clear website that says exactly what you do and where you do it. Consistent name, address, and phone across the web. A steady stream of reviews. Content that answers the real questions customers ask. Do that well and you’re feeding both Google and the AI models at once. You’re not starting over, you’re making sure the foundation you should already have is legible to a machine that’s reading it. (Here’s how to get named by ChatGPT and Google AI specifically.)

What’s new, and worth doing now

A few things are genuinely specific to AI. Clear, plain-language answers on your site that a model can lift directly. Structured information it can parse. And an llms.txt file that hands AI models a clean summary of your site. None of it’s complicated. It’s early, most of your competitors haven’t touched it, and that’s exactly why doing it now is worth more than it will be in two years.

Why I’m telling you this early

I won’t oversell GEO as some separate magic service, it’s mostly your foundation done right, aimed at a new reader. But I also won’t pretend it’s not happening, because the businesses that show up in AI answers first are building a lead the way early Google rankers did. Foundation first, then make sure the machines reading the web can find you in it.

What this looks like for a Michigan business

An AI assistant asked for a roofer in Troy or a med spa near Birmingham doesn’t scroll ten pages. It repeats what it can verify: a clear description of what you do and where, the same name and address on every listing, and real reviews. The businesses that get named are usually the ones whose basics are finished, which is why the local work and the AI work are the same foundation. My version of that work is on AI visibility.

Three questions you can test today

  • Ask ChatGPT who’s the best in your category in your city. Are you named?
  • If not, who is, and what do their site and profile say that yours don’t?
  • Does your own homepage say what you do and where, in one plain sentence?

You’ll learn more from those three minutes than from any report. If you’re named, keep doing what you’re doing. If you’re not, the gap is usually a few fixable things.

Want to see if AI recommends you?

I’ll ask the AI assistants what a customer would ask, live, and show you whether your business gets named, who does, and how to fix it. No pitch deck, no closer, just 30 minutes and a straight answer.
